Bottley Background

Genesis

Bottley was founded in 2015 as Bazaarian. The word bazaar means; a fundraising sale of goods, typically for charity. Its goal was simple, to sell stainless steel water bottles for people in need of access to clean water. The 10% of proceeds from the product sale was donated to a non-profit called Water.org. In 2016, the company was inspired by the One-For-One model by Toms Shoes. Toms Shoes donates a pair of their shoes to kids in Argentina for every pair sold. Hence, the One-For-One model.

This inspiration challenged the company to be more creative with the product and that’s when Hydrade was born, a double-walled insulated smart water bottle that tracks how much a user drinks. This tracking technology was necessary in order for the company to donate funds equivalent to how much the user drinks. For example, when user A drinks 75 oz of water out of Hydrade bottle, Bazaarian donates funds equivalent to 75 oz of water to a non-profit organization that can provide 75 oz of clean water. Therefore, our version of the One-For-One model.

Mission

Bottley's mission: To provide a healthier lifestyle for many people.

While R&D of Hydrade was in place, the founder's dad was diagnosed with type B liver cancer (mainly from chronic consumption of alcohol). From the event, the company was compelled to solve chronic dehydration for people. It really came down to the topic of people’s health.

The lack of access to clean water is problematic as contaminated water and poor sanitation are leading causes of transmission diseases such as typhoid, polio, hepatitis A, dysentery, cholera, and diarrhea. Chronic dehydration, on the other hand, is the cause of diabetes, Urinary Stone Disease (USD), hypertension, high cholesterol, and as simple as fatigue, and lack of concentration.

Many leading causes of chronic dehydration come from drinking (especially habitual consumption) alternatives such as alcohol, beverages that are high in sugar, and/or caffeinated beverages. Our body reacts, thinking that the adequate amount of hydration has been met when in reality, more hydration is needed to process the consumption of alternatives. Therefore, the brain has been re-trained, or we simply don’t drink enough water and our body has been rewired to function to its maximum capacity with most optimization, hence, overworking organs. All in all, lack of drinking water is the problem. And consequently, bad health conditions are absolute.

Bottley’s ultimate goal is to keep users healthier than ever. ⅔ of Americans with some sort of disease are diagnosed with conditions that are preventable with a healthy lifestyle. Bottley ought to reduce that number by providing a kickass platform that not only encourages the users to push their limits but also gets rewarded for their hard work. We believe that health and financial freedom is the basis of the quality of life.

Bottley team also believes that Bottley’s innovation can decentralize the health data by re-addressing the ownership of the health data to the person the health data is regarded as. This means Bottley serves as a platform where users can freely do whatever they wish to do with their health data rather than selling them to health insurance for a reduction of insurance premiums. That being said, Bottley ought to spend an extensive amount of effort on cyber security to protect the privacy of users’ health data while providing a platform of exchange.

Realization to Pivot

Whatever the reason is, people simply don’t drink enough water. With this in mind, the perception of our product, Hydrate has changed. Having a smart water bottle that tracks how much and when the user drinks would not solve the core issue.

Providing a clear and accurate metric of adequate amount of daily hydration based on the user’s age, gender, weight, height, activity level, and local weather is one thing. But harnessing a strong software that can modify the user’s behavior to drink more water and/or to stay healthy is another thing. This is where Bottley’s Platform of blockchain integration comes into play in a form of gamification.

The basis of behavior shaping goes back to operant conditioning prominently attributed to B.F. Skinner, an American psychologist, and behaviorist; 1904 - 1990. Simply put, Skinner’s idea of operant conditioning is that by reinforcing (rewarding) certain behaviors, the outcome of repeating the behavior will be more likely whereas, when a behavior is punished, it will occur less frequently. This operant conditioning is the basis of the Bottley platform.
